Women’s socio-economic empowerment and youth employability at the heart of UfM regional initiatives

• Women largely contribute to human development and stability in the region. In some countries, they make up as much as 63 percent of university students. However, in the Mediterranean region, they represent only 28% of the labor force, 12% of entrepreneurs and 16% of politics. • The region could increase its GDP per capita by 25%, by enhancing women’s equal participation in public life. • The UfM Secretariat’s actions on women’s empowerment and gender equality target more than 50,000 women in the region…. read more

Ministries of Industry of six UfM Countries and Women Business Associations met at the Second Steering Committee of the UfM labelled project “Promoting women’s empowerment for inclusive and sustainable industrial development in the MENA region”.

The Second Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the project was held on Tuesday 9 February 2016 in Casablanca, Morocco. The Regional Steering Committee Meeting consists of the six Ministries of Industry of the related MENA countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia), the representatives of six Women Business Associations in the six beneficiary countries, the Italian Government (as a donor), the UfMS and UNIDO. The ministers of the 5+5 Dialogue welcome the key role of the UfM as a unique forum of cooperation gathering all Mediterranean countries

• The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean attended the 12th Meeting of Foreign Ministers, hosted in Tangier by the Kingdom of Morocco as Co-President of the 5+5 Dialogue. • 100,000 young people are benefiting directly from 16 of the 33 UfM-labelled projects in a region with almost 30% youth unemployment.  • These projects are related to areas such as education and mobility (the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes ); employability (the Med4Jobs initiative); business creation (“Generation Entrepreneur” project), and women’s empowerment, with 10 projects launched and 50,000 beneficiaries.   Barcelona, 8 October 2015. Sciences Po PAris provides Southern Mediterranean young women leaders with high-level training programme as part of “WoMED – next generation of leaders” project

As part of its women empowerment strategy, UfM has labelled a leadership project called WoMED “next generation of leaders” for 22 young women from the Southern Mediterranean, which aims to improve their leadership capacities and gender equality skills.
