29-30 January 2019, Barcelona. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean hosted this past 29 and 30 January the annual meeting of the UfM Energy Platforms in Barcelona, Spain. The UfM Energy Platforms are the only existing dialogue forum gathering all Euro-Mediterranean countries as well as the key stakeholders dealing with electricity markets, renewable energy, energy efficiency and gas in the Mediterranean region. The Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), Taieb Baccouche, joined by AMU’s Director of Cabinet, Political Affairs and Information, Besma Soudani, visited for the first time the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in Barcelona and met with its Secretary General, Nasser Kamel. Nasser Kamel, the Secretary General of the Union of the Mediterranean, participated in the 15th Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 5+5 Dialogue in Valletta (Malta). Ministers agreed on the need to continue enhancing cooperation in a number of areas including sustainable development and migration, while placing a particular emphasis on youth, the biggest potential for a better future and a net benefit to our common region. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), actively participates in COP24 in Poland, where it presents two studies on the impact of climate change and on the state of play of climate finance in the region. Without additional mitigation, regional temperature increase will be of 2.2°C in 2040, possibly exceeding 3.8°C in some regions in 2100.
