Meeting with Ada Colau: UfM paving the way to the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process
Barcelona, 19 November 2019. UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel, was received on Tuesday 19 November 2019 by Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, host city of the UfM Secretariat.
During their first meeting since her re-election last April, SG Kamel took the opportunity to commend Mayor Colau on her ambitious programmes for the city, reiterating the importance of cities and local governments in pushing forward inclusive and sustainable development agendas, localizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Kamel further highlighted the UfM Secretariat readiness to further enhance its action at local level, notably to address more effectively the climate emergency faced across the Euro-Mediterranean region. He took the opportunity to commend the ambitious Climate Plan of the Colau administration, which aims to propel the city towards a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and turn it into a carbon-neutral one by 2050.
The meeting was also the occasion to kick-off the preparations for the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, in 2020. Mayor Colau and SG Kamel exchanged together on their respective institution’s plans for these important commemorations, and agreed to set a taskforce to work in full complementarity towards that end.
Mayor Colau has recently been appointed Special Envoy to the United Nations for the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).
