• The UfM Secretariat is currently developing a strategy to actively engage the private sector towards greater socio-economic cooperation and development in the Mediterranean region.

• “The private sector has a crucial role to play in achieving a more prosperous and integrated Mediterranean, and is thus an essential partner to foster greater investment opportunities and trade as well as technology and knowledge transfer in the region”, said UfM Senior Deputy Secretary General for Business Development, Claudio Cortese, during a meeting with high-level private sector representatives today in Barcelona.

• The UfM Secretariat will help stimulate business development in the region by establishing a platform for dialogue, exchange of experiences, identification of training needs and dissemination of best practices in the context of cultural and creative industries.

• The project further develops the regional dimension of the EU/UNIDO’s initiative, “Support for the Development of Cultural and Creative Industries and Clusters in the Southern Mediterranean”.

Participants encouraged the establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean network to exchange information, best practices and innovative programmes on job intermediation.

The initiative is designed to primarily aid micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) from the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries involved in the project. In addition, public and private agencies are also expected to greatly benefit from this project, thanks to the capacity building programmes deployed.

The project will support the Central Banks of Jordan and Morocco in the development of regulations expanding access to financial services among the Mediterranean population through innovative retail payment solutions such as mobile financial services.

EU Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes, Jordanian ICT Minster H.E. Azzam Sleit and UfM Secretary General Sijilmassi, together with the Heads of Delegation from 43 countries around the Mediterranean today launched new Digital Economy initiatives.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS –Clusters in Cultural and Creative industries from Southern Mediterranean countries are invited to submit their applications to participate in a cooperation project developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the UfM Secretariat to promote business development, entrepreneurial cooperation and increased competitiveness in the cultural field.

The 43 countries comprising the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) have approved four new projects promoting mobile financial services, urban sustainable development, private sector development and cooperation among civil society organisations in the field of water and environment, respectively.
