Higher Education on Food Security and Rural Development
Context and objectives
The Higher Education on Food Security and Rural Development project aims to improve postgraduate programmes offered by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), in order to enhance cooperation among Mediterranean countries in the fields of food security and rural development.
The CIHEAM has historically been at the forefront of Mediterranean cooperation in the areas of agriculture, food safety and security. Over the years, the CIHEAM and the UfM have strengthened their partnership, promoting cooperation on agricultural sciences, food security and rural development in the Mediterranean.
This project aims to improve CIHEAM’s Master of Science degrees and advanced training courses for professionals. In addition to this, scholarships will be allocated to students from the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean.

Promoter
The project is promoted by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). This intergovernmental organisation works to improve sustainable agriculture and fisheries, ensure food security, and develop rural and coastal territories.
The organisation gathers 13 Member States from both shores of the Mediterranean and works in partnership with several international and regional institutions.
Beneficiaries
The project benefits all students and professionals participating in the CIHEAM postgraduate programmes. These include members of competent authorities, officers in public administrations, agro-food industry managers, technical advisors, academics from higher education and research institutions, etc.
Key actions
Establishing an observatory aimed at promoting graduate entrepreneurship and employability, as well as increasing the participation of women in the programmes.
Enhancing the international recognition of the MSc degrees by strengthening mobility and creating joint diplomas.
Implementing a Mediterranean Doctoral Platform providing training and financial support to PhD students.
Promoting e-learning by creating a virtual campus.
Expected results
Strengthened skills and competences of all students and professionals participating in the CIHEAM postgraduate programmes.
72 scholarships awarded to female students from the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean enrolled in MSc degrees, through cooperation of CIHEAM and the UfM.
