The Mediterranean region faces significant energy challenges: increasing population of over 500 million inhabitants with growing energy demands; warming 20% faster than the global average; intensive industrialization and tourism growth putting pressure on available energy resources. In view of turning these challenges into opportunities, the UfM established three UfM Energy Platforms.
The UfM REEE Platform aims at promoting the progressive deployment of renewables and energy efficiency measures, in order to foster socio-economic development and a sustainable energy transition, contributing to ensure that all citizens and businesses of the region have access to secure, affordable and reliable modern energy services. It also works to support mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The UfM ensures the secretariat of the platform, in close coordination with the UfM Co‑Presidency. RCREEE (Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Enercgy Efficiency) and MEDENER (Mediterranean Association of National Agencies for Energy Management) are key contributors to the work of the platform.
