World Health Day 2020: UfM Secretary General Statement
7 April 2020. This year, on World Health Day, we celebrate the work of nurses and midwives, and recall the critical role they play in keeping the world healthy.
From China to Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa and beyond, unprecedented and firm policy measures have been taken to limit the rapid spread of the COVID-19. In the meantime, scientific, medical and pharmaceutical communities across the globe have stepped-up their efforts to deliver treatments and care for the sick. Restlessly, they have been providing high quality treatment and care, leading community dialogue to address fears and interrogations and, in some instances, collecting data for clinical studies. Put it simply, without them, there would be no response to the greatest crisis we face in over a century.
We are calling for Euro-Mediterranean support beyond World Health Day to ensure that the nursing and midwifery workforces are given the tools to ensure that everyone, everywhere gets the healthcare they need.
Today more than ever, as Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean and on behalf of all our colleagues and partners, I want to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the health workers who risk their own lives every single day for our good health and safety. Your invaluable contribution towards defeating this COVID-19 Pandemic will never be forgotten.
