UfM strengthens Euro-Mediterranean energy cooperation at EGYPES 2026
1 April 2026, Cairo – The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) took part in the 9th edition of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026), held in Cairo from 30 March to 1 April under the theme “Transforming Energy through Collaboration, Action and Realism”. The event brought together global energy leaders, policymakers and industry executives to address the energy trilemma of security, affordability and sustainability amid geopolitical tensions and global crises.
The UfM’s presence at EGYPES 2026 was strongly highlighted through the active participation of Secretary General Nasser Kamel across a series of high-level engagements throughout the conference. During a high-level session on energy markets, security and infrastructure, the Secretary General underlined the UfM’s role as a regional cooperation framework and a bridge between the European Union and Southern and Eastern Mediterranean partners. He stressed the need to harmonise regulatory frameworks, expand cross-border infrastructure and address financing gaps through blended and de-risking financing mechanisms. He also underscored the importance of combining renewable energy expansion with reliable transition solutions to strengthen resilience against geopolitical shocks.
The Secretary General also took part in a closed-door strategic leadership roundtable on trade routes and strategic influence in the new energy economy. In this exchange with ministers, heads of international organisations and industry leaders, he highlighted the Mediterranean’s profound energy transformation and the importance of stronger interconnections and converged regulatory frameworks. He pointed to the vast renewable energy potential of the Southern Mediterranean and stressed that regional corridors and electricity links are essential to strengthening Euro-Mediterranean integration and long-term energy resilience.
