UfM new leadership team meets Commissioner Šuica to advance Pact for the Mediterranean cooperation
2 June 2026, Brussels. The Union for the Mediterranean’s newly appointed Deputy Secretaries General met today with European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica in Brussels, reaffirming their shared commitment to a stronger Mediterranean through enhanced regional cooperation and the implementation of the Pact for the Mediterranean.
The meeting took place as the UfM embarks on an ambitious reform agenda, with a new leadership team now in place to strengthen the organisation’s impact, delivery capacity and regional role. Discussions underlined the complementarity between the Pact for the Mediterranean and the UfM Vision Statement, both of which aim to advance a more stable, integrated, resilient and inclusive Mediterranean region.
The UfM team stressed that regional cooperation must respond more effectively to today’s Mediterranean challenges, including instability, economic fragmentation, climate pressures and social divides. The Pact provides strategic direction, while the UfM contributes through regional dialogue, stakeholder mobilisation, ministerial processes and operational follow-up across its Member States.
At a time of renewed political momentum, the meeting also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the UfM plays a structured role in the Pact’s implementation. This includes closer alignment between UfM platforms and future ministerial roadmaps, stronger coordination with European Union institutions, and the mobilisation of regional data, expertise and stakeholder feedback.
During the same visit, UfM senior staff also met with representatives of the organisation’s Co-Presidency, the European Union and Jordan, to discuss shared priorities and advance cooperation across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The new leadership team sends a strong institutional signal. Women make up the majority of the team, while its members bring diverse skills, expertise and complementary perspectives on the Mediterranean. This renewed leadership reflects the UfM’s determination to transform the organisation and strengthen its role as a platform for regional ownership, dialogue and concrete cooperation.
