Catalyzing innovation: UfM and EU introduce dynamic Euro-Med Hub for Research and Innovation
16-18 April 2024, Brussels – The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the European Commission announced the launch of the Euro-Mediterranean Hub for Research and Innovation (R&I) during a series of R&I events held within the framework of UNIMED Week in Brussels.
This groundbreaking initiative aims to serve as a pivotal platform for learning and collaboration, fostering Mediterranean cooperation while advancing the UfM Regional Policy Dialogue on R&I. The Hub will play a crucial role in facilitating the implementation of R&I roadmaps focusing on critical areas such as health, renewable energies, and climate change.
The newly inaugurated portal, accessible at http://euromedhub-ri.org/, consolidates a wealth of resources including research findings, best practices, policy papers, and other pertinent publications. Moreover, it offers a comprehensive array of opportunities for R&I collaboration, ranging from funding avenues to initiatives supporting cooperative Mediterranean R&I ecosystems, such as networks and cluster organisations.
The launch event showcased the UfM’s steadfast commitment to regional research and innovation. Co-organised with the European Commission, this event highlighted the following key activities:
- Funders Roundtable on Next Steps to support the UfM Roadmap on Health, Renewable Energy and Climate Change: Held on April 17th, this roundtable delved into the implementation of UfM R&I roadmaps, endorsed at the UfM Ministerial Conference on Research and Innovation in 2022. Discussions centered on identifying funding mechanisms and fostering international cooperation to drive tangible outcomes.
- Soft Launch of the Euro-Mediterranean Hub for R&I: On April 18th, the Hub was officially unveiled, serving as a collaborative platform to bolster the UfM Regional Policy Dialogue on R&I, further enhancing cooperation across the Mediterranean.
- Horizon Europe NCPs Regional Meeting: This event, also held on April 18th, provided training and visibility on funding opportunities under Horizon Europe, including through the Mediterranean Initiative, reinforcing UfM’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving innovation.
These initiatives underscore the UfM’s dedication to fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and achieving sustainable development goals across the Mediterranean region.
