Celebrating the Day of the Mediterranean in Barcelona
27 September 2021, Barcelona. UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel met with Ms. Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, city where the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership was launched back in 1995 and where the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean is based. During their meeting, SG Kamel and Mayor Colau discussed the preparation of the Day of the Mediterranean and the celebration of its first edition this year in the city of Barcelona.
In their first in-person meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Secretary General further emphasized the central role Barcelona has played in Euro-Mediterranean relations since the launch of the Barcelona Process, in 1995. Both parties agreed on the importance of the first-ever commemoration of the Day of the Mediterranean, notably due to the city’s close ties to the greater Euro-Mediterranean region. Were discussed the possibility of holding exhibitions, concerts, as well as increasing the visibility of the event throughout the city, in view of mobilizing the citizens of Barcelona around it.
The annual Day of the Mediterranean, to be celebrated on 28 November 2021, will be an opportunity for “the entire Mediterranean community and everyone who identifies with the Mediterranean to celebrate the lasting legacy of this age-old agora of cultural dialogue, wisdom and humanism”, underlined Secretary General Kamel. This day was unanimously declared by the 42 Member States of the UfM in November 2020, during the 5th UfM Regional Dialogue/25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process.
