The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) have signed an agreement to strengthen the private sector’s involvement in economic and social development in the Mediterranean region.

Over 25 private sector representatives from more than 10 countries participated in the seminar together with the Heads of Cooperation from EU Delegations in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

As the European Investment Bank plans major investments in the Mediterranean region, partner countries and stakeholders met in Naples to identify and take advantage of new opportunities for growth.

The initiative is designed to primarily aid micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) from the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries involved in the project. In addition, public and private agencies are also expected to greatly benefit from this project, thanks to the capacity building programmes deployed.

The project will support the Central Banks of Jordan and Morocco in the development of regulations expanding access to financial services among the Mediterranean population through innovative retail payment solutions such as mobile financial services.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS –Clusters in Cultural and Creative industries from Southern Mediterranean countries are invited to submit their applications to participate in a cooperation project developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the UfM Secretariat to promote business development, entrepreneurial cooperation and increased competitiveness in the cultural field.

The 43 countries comprising the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) have approved four new projects promoting mobile financial services, urban sustainable development, private sector development and cooperation among civil society organisations in the field of water and environment, respectively.

• The Forum took place in Lisbon, bringing together more than 400 business leaders and high-level representatives of major enterprises and economic institutions from Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia.

• Paulo Portas, Deputy Prime Minister of Portugal, gave a keynote speech during the forum’s inaugural session. He reaffirmed Portugal’s full support to this informal but dynamic and efficient process and stressed on the importance of the UfM’s role for its consolidation.
