Marine Renewable Energies – Fast advancing technologies and promising opportunities

Offshore wind is currently the most mature type of marine renewable energy in the Mediterranean region in terms of technology, policy frameworks, commercialization and installed capacity, particularly in the parts with the highest wind speed (Gulf of Lion, the central Aegean Sea, and the Kasos Straits in the south-eastern Aegean Sea). In view of the geomorphological characteristics of the Mediterranean, waves are also promising. Furthermore, when considering the possibility of further technological advancements, floating solar also offers promising growth trends.
Building on the most recent findings of a comprehensive UfM report and through selected presentation and interventions, the event will focus on the sectoral characteristics, challenges and opportunities of the deployment of Marine Renewable Energies (MRE), including:
->Recent developments at the EU and the Union for the Mediterranean levels, contributing to a Sustainable Blue Economy
->Conflicts and synergies with different uses of the maritime space, namely tourism, fisheries and shipping
->Long-term environmental impacts and concerns, such as noise levels, collision risk, habitat alteration or contaminants release
->The potential of the sector in terms of the technological development
->The particular potential of floating offshore wind technology in the Mediterranean Sea given that it can be deployed in deeper waters and offshore areas
->Need to strengthen the Mediterranean regional cooperation in energy, grid and marine spatial planning for cost optimisation
->Further development of sustainable energy self-sufficiency of coastal areas and islands
->Enhancing the transition towards carbon-neutral ports
