November 27, 2023, Barcelona. The 8th Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Forum will take place in Barcelona on November 27, 2023. Initially foreseen to focus on the UfM’s 15th anniversary and ongoing reform, Euro-Mediterranean Foreign Affairs ministers will instead gather to discuss the critical situation in Israel and Gaza-Palestine as well as the consequences in the region. The Forum will offer a timely opportunity to exchange amongst all members about the dramatic situation on the ground and the way forward.
Representatives of the 43 UfM Member States are invited to the event chaired by Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, alongside Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan, in the presence of Nasser Kamel, the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean. The UfM Regional Forum will be hosted by José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain. Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, will be in attendance representing the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee.
Held in the framework of the celebrations of the Day of the Mediterranean, unanimously endorsed by all UfM Member States in 2020, the 7th Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Forum took place in Barcelona.
The 6th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) took place on 29 November 2021 in Barcelona, Spain, in the framework of the celebrations of the first Day of the Mediterranean.
The 5th UfM Regional Forum brought together the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the UfM Member States on 27 November 2020 to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of the Barcelona Process and reiterate their engagement in Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and cooperation. They also declared 28 November as the ‘International Day of the Mediterranean’, to be observed from now on each year.
The 4th UfM Regional Forum provided the occasion to present ground-breaking findings of the first-ever scientific report on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean area. Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the UfM gathered in Barcelona to the regional priorities for the coming year and reaffirmed their strong commitment to Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and to the region’s inclusive and sustainable development.
The third Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Forum was held in Barcelona under the title ‘10 years: Building together the future of regional. cooperation’. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the organisation, UfM countries took stock of the progress achieved to date, and discussed the way forward to build inclusive human and sustainable development. They confirmed the strategic link between Europe and the Mediterranean as a firm basis for progress in achieving the goals and objectives of the UfM.
In January 2017, under the EU and Jordan UfM Co-presidency, the UfM Member States gave a strong political commitment to strengthen regional cooperation in the Mediterranean by endorsing a roadmap for action at the second Regional Forum of the UfM under the theme of Mediterranean in Action: Youth for Stability and Development.
The UfM Co-presidency, the EU and Jordan, and the 43 Member called for unity and collective work during their high level meeting held in Barcelona in November 2015. Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Nasser Judeh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan, and José Manuel García-Margallo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, stressed the importance of the UfM as the regional framework for political dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean.
