UfM calls for urgent climate action as Mediterranean Pavilion unifies regional voice and unveils latest scientific findings at COP30

The Mediterranean is a climate hotspot, warming about 20% faster than the global average, and it is among the most plastic‑polluted seas worldwide. One third of the population lives in coastal areas, where sea levels rise by 2.8 mm per year. Without accelerated climate action, up to 20 million people could face permanent displacement by 2100. UfM and Interreg NEXT MED renew commitment to tackling regional challenges together

12 March 2025, Barcelona – The Union for the Mediterranean and Interreg NEXT MED, the largest EU-funded transnational cooperation programme promoting socioeconomic development and environmental initiatives in the Mediterranean Basin, have reached an agreement formally extending collaboration between both parties for at least another three years. The Memorandum of Understanding, which highlights how both Euro-Mediterranean institutions strive to reinforce political, socioeconomic, and cultural ties in the region, was signed by UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel and Director General of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme Giovanna Medde. Mediterranean Pavilion at COP29: A unified voice for urgent climate action and innovative solutions

13-21 November, Baku, Azerbaijan – The COP29 hosted the Mediterranean Pavilion, an initiative conceived by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)to highlight both the urgent challenges the Mediterranean is currently facing, and the innovative solutions being developed, raising awareness of a region. A highlight of the Pavilion was the presentation by MedECC, an independent network of over 600 Euro-Mediterranean climate and environmental scientists from 35 countries. They shared the latest findings on the impacts of climate and environmental change on coastal zones and the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems nexus. Today MedECC, the network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change, and the Union for the Mediterranean presented the latest scientific findings on the impacts of climate and environmental change on the region’s coastal zones as well as on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems nexus at COP29 in Baku.
