Charting a sustainable course: MARLOG 13 tackles green ports and blue economy

Transport & Urban Development
  • The resilience and adaptability of ports and shipping are vital for transport connectivity, enhanced regional integration, and for addressing longer-term sustainability goals.
  • “MARLOG 13” addresses the latest trends and innovations in sustainable and resilient green blue infrastructure in ports and logistics.
  • The UfM-supported Blue Mediterranean Partnership will support transition to a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean region.

3-5 March 2024, Alexandria, Egypt. The 13th edition of the International Maritime Transport and Logistics Conference “MARLOG 13” held in Alexandria, Egypt on 2-5 March 2024, addressed the latest trends and innovations in sustainable and resilient green blue infrastructure in ports and logistics.

Experts in ports, logistics, sustainability, and technology discussed the role of technology, the importance of public-private partnerships in sustainability initiatives, the need for education and training in sustainability. The conference served as a forum to enhance regional dialogue and cooperation opportunities with global and regional stakeholders, as well as with longtime partners such as the Arab Academy’s Port Training Institute and MEDports Association.

UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel during his Keynote Speech highlighted the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP), which has been promoted and established with the support of the UfM Secretariat, as a unique and visionary response to the growing needs for cross-border collaboration in the sustainable blue economy sector. This new multi-donor and multi-IFI partnership will leverage blue economy investments in the region and aims to mobilise over €1 billion in investments.

During his keynote intervention, UfM Head of Sector for Transport Francesc Carbonell recalled the vital role of ports and shipping in the transport system connectivity, given their global economic reach, and presented how ports and maritime transport can cope with shocks, disruptions and changing conditions by promoting sustainable, climate-adapted and resilient infrastructure.

The conference which was supported by the UfM the in the framework of its ongoing collaboration with the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), was co-organised alongside the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), and the MEDports Association.
