The event brought together more than 300 participants from 25 member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Initiative for Jobs (Med4Jobs), a programme developed by the UfM Secretariat to contribute towards job creation and business development in the region, was launched at the conference.

The Head of the Tunisian Government, Ali Larayedh, gave a keynote speech during the inaugural session of the Mediterranean Economic Conference. The event was co-organised by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Tunisian Government with the aim to address the unemployment and territorial development challenges in the Southern Mediterranean region.
Under the auspices of the Head of the Tunisian Government, the Union for the Mediterranean will hold the Mediterranean Economic Conference in Tunis on 17 and 18 September, 2013. The conference, co-organized with the Tunisian Government, will focus on the theme of ‘Employment and Territorial Development’, offering a platform for reflection and action to address the unemployment challenge in the Southern Mediterranean region.
A High-level meeting with Arab Financial Institutions and Development Agencies was held at the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean on June 26th. Discussions focused on three main areas: Regional Infrastructure Networks, Employment Challenge and Job Creation, as well as Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development.

The Secretary General of the UfM, Fathallah Sijilmassi, welcomed the Ambassador of Cyprus, Antonis Toumazis, at the UfM premises, in Barcelona. Both parties signed a cooperation agreement that foresees the support of the Government of Cyprus to the UfM work and initiatives.
On the occasion of the International Conference on Productive work for youth in Tunisia and in the MENA region, UfM Secretary General discussed with Tunisian High-level officials concrete ways to support investment, development and employment in the region.
Minister Terzi confirmed the Italian commitment to reinforce the role of the Union for the Mediterranean, in particular its capacity to develop concrete socio-economic projects that meet the needs of the Mediterranean populations.
The relations between France and the Union for the Mediterranean and the development of an operational collaboration to implement concrete projects in the Mediterranean region were the main subjects of discussion between the Secretary General of the UfM, Fathallah Sijilmassi, and the French Minister of Administrative Reform, Decentralization and the Civil Service, Marylise Lebranchu.
The European Association of Craft, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (UEAPME) and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) signed yesterday a cooperation agreement to reinforce the exchanges between the European and Moroccan Small business support organizations.
