UfM at the 4th Dii Desert Energy Conference: Building a future on Renewable Energy in the Mediterranean

Energy & Climate Action

Rabat, 31 October 2013. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean participated in the 4th Dii Desert Energy Conference, held in Rabat on 30-31 October, 2013. During the conference, the UfM Secretary General Sijilmassi explained the common objectives existing between the UfM Secretariat and the Desertec Industrial Initiative (Dii) in their long-term strategies, the “Mediterranean Solar Plan” (MSP) and the “Desert Power 2050”.

During his participation in the discussion panel “Policy roundtable discussion: What is the political agenda to establish a market for Renewable Energy in EUMENA?”, the UfM Secretary General praised Dii’s active involvement in the collective efforts to develop the Mediterranean Solar Plan, which will be submitted for political endorsement in the coming UfM Ministerial Meeting on Energy, set to take place in Brussels on 11 December, 2013.

The Secretary General Sijilmassi stressed how sectors directly concerned with Renewable Energy can be an important source for job creation in North Africa and the Middle East. During the roundtable, he emphasized the importance of the regional dimension of the Mediterranean Solar Plan and its added value, as well as the different aspects covered by this initiative and its implementation.

The UfM Deputy Secretary General Teresa Ribeiro participated in the session “Creating a market for renewables in MENA tomorrow”. On the margins of the conference, she also had meetings with officials from the UfM member states and stakeholders of the Mediterranean Solar Plan in order to discuss ways and means to boost regional cooperation on Energy.
