UfM Secretary General participates in the UN Ocean Summit in Lisbon, Portugal
27-28 June 2022, Lisbon The UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel attended the UN Ocean Summit where he showcased the work of the Union for the Mediterranean on the protection of the Mediterranean Sea and environment.
The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, comes at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs.
The SG took the opportunity to meet with the recently appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Joao Cravinho to discuss Portugal’s engagement on the UfM Secretariat’s work.
To mobilize action at the Euro-Mediterranean level, the UfM Secretary General also met with DG Director MARE General Charlina Vitcheva and Olivier Poivre d’Arvor – Special Envoy for the Sea for France.
The Conference was also the occasion to exchange on the upcoming COP27, to be held in Egypt a UfM Member State, with the Minister for International Development Cooperation of Sweden – Matilda Ernkrans, the Egyptian Minister for Environment – Yasmine Fouad and His Majesty Prince Albert II of Monaco.
