The UfM-labelled project “Jordanian National Railway project as part of a Regional Railway Network” has been selected among the 2014 Strategic Top 100 Global Infrastructure Projects by CG/LA Infrastructure. Its main expected result is to achieve a closer integration among the transport markets of the Mediterranean, thus making transport connections faster, cheaper and more efficient to the benefit of citizens and business.
Barcelona, 26 February, 2014. The UfM-labelled project “Jordanian National Railway project as part of a Regional Railway Network” has been selected as one of the 2014 Strategic Top 100 Global Infrastructure Projects by CG/LA Infrastructure. The official report gathering the 100 projects selected for 2014 will be presented on the occasion of the 7th Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum, being held on 26-28 February, 2014, in New York City.
The “Jordanian National Railway project as part of a Regional Railway Network” is a project promoted by the Ministry of Transport of Jordan. It aims to integrate the Jordan railway system with the regional network by establishing an effective rail connection with neighbouring countries. The construction of a “North-South Corridor” from the Syrian Border to the Port of Aqaba (509 km) is the first phase and the backbone of the project. The Corridor is the main rail line of this proposed network, connecting Amman, the surrounding logistics centres and the nation´s gateway port of Aqaba. The North-South Line will further extend to the north of Amman to connect with Syria. The realization of the North-South Corridor started in 2014 and is expected to finish in 2020.
As a result of the project, Jordan will be connected to Turkey and Europe on the one hand, and in future to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The project´s outcome will have a multiplying effect for the Mediterranean region and for Europe as a whole, enabling increased mobility of the populations, facilitating international freight flows and business opportunities.
