UfM Senior Officials convene in Barcelona and discuss preparations for the upcoming 9th UfM Regional Forum

26 September 2024, Barcelona – Senior officials from the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) gathered today in Barcelona, to address several key topics, including the reform of UfM and its next steps. Launched in 2023, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the organisation, the reform process aims at reshaping a renewed vision and priorities for the UfM, in view of enhancing its role, impact and efficiency across the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The meeting addressed the most pressing challenges across the region, notably the alarming situation in the Middle East. The 9th UfM Regional Forum, gathering the Foreign Ministers of the UfM Member States, will convene in October 2024 to tackle those issues.

UfM activities in 2024

During the meeting, UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel, and his Deputies provided a comprehensive debriefing on the UfM Secretariat’s activities, including the implementation of the reform measures taken by member states in the last year, in view of reinforcing the institutional capacities of the organisation.

The two recently appointed UfM Deputy Secretary Generals, Stephen Borg and Joan Borrell, had the opportunity to address member states for the first time and update them on their sectors of activity, youth and women empowerment, disability and civil protection, as well as Higher Education, Research and Innovation, respectively.

Finally, Senior Officials discussed the nomination of the new Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue for 2026, which will be announced on the 9th UfM Regional Forum. This initiative, which aims to celebrate and promote intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, underscores the UfM’s commitment to building further bridges across the region.
